The CIS stated that an amendment is needed if the beneficiary's job duties change or the location of employment changes. A change in job title may be arguly considered as a material change in job (at least benefit changes, research associate is considered as a regular position). For your safety, file an amendment I-129 for your H1-B. Some universities requires an amendment under such situation, others do not.
