If there is big gap between OPT and H1-B (5 months in your case), better fill the gap by extending your I-20. Otherwise, it is likely that CIS won't allow you to change status within the US. You may have to leave to grab the H1. CIS allowed such a gap before 2004 but changed their practice last year. Anyway, you can stay 60 days after your OPT or until a decision on your H-1B is made, whichever is longer.
