I know a little bit about the history
1. In the past, any one with 485 pending had to use AP for traveling purpose. Using any visa including H/L indicates that they abandon their 485.
2. Then INS changed their policy to allow people on H/L to trave on H/L without jeopadize their 485.
3. In april, 2001. An INS memo was issued to change the policy back to their original stance: people with 485 status pending can only travel on AP.
4. On May 16, 2001. A new INS memo (the final memo) reverse the previous memo. And this time H/Ls are given the maximum freedom. They can travel either on H/L visa or AP. Their working authorization, ability to extend, ability to change to other status, their 485 will not be hurted.
Currently, if people on H/L travels using AP. Their status will be technically changed to parolled. However, it is just a technical change. Such a parolled status is same, repeat same, as their original H/L. They can still work without EAD until the expiration date of their original H/L staus. They can still extend their H/L. They are able to change to other status.
The link to the final memo is as follows.
