You cannot stay outside US long enough with AP. The purpose of AP is for emergency, which means you shall still keep a position in US, only leave US for a short while, say a couple of months at most. If you stay longer than 6 months, you will be questioned while re-enter US, and could be dennied entrance, in which case your I485 will be automatically dismissed. So, if not absolutely necessary, do not leave US on AP for a prolonged time, otherwise your I485 will be jeapodized.
