现在申请NIW有什么意义?

I am doing post-doc now and going to file NIW application. I am wondering if I can take a job in industry during this process. I am asking this question because it will take such a long time to get I-485 approved, I don't want to stuck in post-doc for that long time. Thanks a lot!
