This topic has been discussed many times on this forum. There was a USCIS memo which said if you used AP, and came back to the same company to work, you still have the H1 Status.

But university people are always more cautious on this. My univesrity asked me to get EAD. They said this memo was issued many years ago, and USCIS can change it any day.
