old I94 taken in border?

Thanks a lot for your help.
My parents need to re-enter the US for another 6 months' stay, so they have to have their current I94 been taken away when crossing Canadian boarder in order to get a new I94 when coming back.
I heard it will ot be taken if traveling by car but by air, it is true? how were you parents?
