You can still go back since your return permit only expired this January 2003. Time in Return permit is deemed as staying in Canada for the purpose of maintaining PR status. You still have valid Canadian PR until January 2006.

However, if you went back after January 1, 2004, you must apply for an one-entry permit from your local Canadian Consulate.
