Offically, you have to keep legal status until you get immigrant visa. Buffalo usually will ask for an updated employer letter in the second letter, but I would suggest to keep leagal status before landing. Otherwise you might face difficulty when you try to come bacek to US in future, even you are a Canadian citizen at that time.
