They didn't turn in the I94 cards. They are not intending to stay here longer than 6 months.

Valid visa means, their visa had one more entry at that time. My parents got a visa valid for 3 months, with 2 entries. They used one entry when entering U.S. They used the second one entry when returning from Canada.

It is very easy to get Canadian visitor's visas.
