As long as the Receipt Date on your hu*****and' 485 receipt notice is earlier than the expiration date of his most recent I-94, he is perfectly OK. After 485, he does not need to maintain any non-immigration status, instead, he can legally stay in the US and use EAD under 485 to work. If this is the case, he even does not need to get his L-1 renewed. After the receipt date of I-485, he can stay in the US as long as his 485 is pending, using AP to travel and EAD to work WITHOUT any other status. His status is "485 pending" or "Adjustee".
