Here is what my lawyer says:

Previously, I-485 applicants were not permitted to travel abroad until advance permission was secured from the USCIS in the form of the advance parole document. However, pursuant to interim USCIS regulations, if you are in H-1B or L-1 status, you and your family members (in H-4 or L-2 status) may travel outside of the United States and reenter with your respective valid H or L visas in your passports and I-485 receipt notices, provided you will continue to be employed pursuant to your H-1B or L-1 status when you reenter the United States.
