Normally all lawyers ask you to prepare rec. letters by yourself. On other hand, it is not good for you to ask lawyer to prepare the letter because he doesn't know you and your research well. All of my friends who got NIW prepare their letters by themselves. Of course, lawyer will improve your letter after you finish the draft.
