No you don't have to transfer or refile your I-485 as long as you are still in similar field of research (I assume that you filed I-140 on your own via NIW or outstanding category). If you want to still work under H-1B, you need to apply for a new one. Otherwise, apply for EAD card. Hope that helps. I'm also in CA.
