I thing your understanding is wrong.

As long as 485 petition is still pending after Oct 1st, then the priority date will be effective, which means that 485 petition will be archieved at USCIS and would no longer be processed until priority date becomes current again. It is wrong to think that once priority date is current and adjustment of status is applied, priority date is irrelevant. Priority date always matters until you get your green card.
