Help with H1-B transfer!!!!!!

I am going to apply for a H1-B transfer for my new job. I heard I can start working for the new employer once the H1-B transfer notice is received. But what if the notice get delayed and I already told my current employer when my last day at work would be? There would be a gap between the current H1-B and the transfer notice. Does anyone know whether such a gap is permitted? If not, how to deal with this situation. Your help is really appreciated.
