question about I485 references

I am currently a Ph.D student. I just got the notice from USCIS asking for references. Specifically ,they asked for employment letter. Does anyone has such experience and has the same situation as a student? Then, Where did you get the employment letter, from the department or from your advisor? I appreciate your response.
