Canada landing question

I plan to land in Canada during this Labor day. Have 2 questions:

1. The passport request letter stated that I can bring the passport to Buffalo to get visa stamp. Can anyone share experience? Can I get it in 1 day?

2. Both me and my wife are F1 so we plan to give the port immigration officer our relative's address in Canada for Maple card mailing, then turn around back to US after landing. Is that ok? What should I tell the officer? Would there be trouble if I tell them that we'll return to US to complete our study?

Any answers&suggestions are highly appreciated.
