I485 need help

Filed I485 in April 2002 in CA. Now three and half years passed and having renewed EAD four times, I still haven't gotten my Green card. I job relocated to MA in 2004 and then to Illinois this summer. I contacted my lawyer last September. He said I was selected for security check. But it is been one year even for the check. Even they do background security check, that got to be an end. Any one can kindly advise on this how to finish the endlss waiting? It's very frustrating since I need GC for some grant application.
