Understand your feelings. I was in a similiar situation before. Need to realize that you cann't replace either the HR or the attorney. So has to be constructive when working with them. If there is a difficulty in negotiation, try to get the help from your boss (even boss's boss if ok/possible). You got at least 8 months' time to make it work in your way, right?
