I20 does not decide when the F1 status begins, even after a change of status is approved. It is shown on the new I94 she gets. That is why I assumed she got the I20 start date confused with the F1 status start date.

This also adds to my reason from above. There is no automatic change of status, and since she said 自动就转, I had more reason to suspect she got wrong advice from their office or she misunderstood.

Since I had these doubts, I tried to be general in my advice and laid out several possibilities under different situations.
