If you used B visa to enter US and did not tell US immigration officer that you wanted to study in US, you can't change your status to student within US. You have to leave US to apply for an F1 visa to enter US. When you get your admission letter, I-20 and financial document, you can apply for your visa. If you apply for visa in Canada, the interview date is about 30 days later than the date you make the appointment.

If you used another status to enter US, i.e., H4, F2, you can change your status to F1 in US. The processing time in UCSIC is about 30-90 days depending on different sevice center. Before your status is approved, you can't register for classes.
