AP， after 6 years and if you are good enough, u will get tenure to be associate professor. Then after some years (maybe the whole life) and you are qualified, you will become professor. Not anyone can be full professor, only if you are so good.

During 6 years of AP, if you can't bring enough funding for the university, you will be fired. Then, 落毛的凤凰不如鸡
