Your question is well taken.  I would suggest you to ask those people who are insulin dependent.  Ask for their life styles.  You may never realize that pocking your skin 3-4 times a day with a needle,  checking blood sugar level changes, and doing injections every day, multiple times,  for the rest of their lives (decades). 

Not to mention the complications:  blindness, heart attack,  stoke, kidney failure requiring dialysis.
