And genetics usually refers to 遗传学。I guess you meant 1-5% of cancers are hereditary.

Not all cancers are caused by gene mutations, for example, the cancers that we discussed in the last few days--those caused by HPV or other viruses, actually are not through somatic gene mutation. Rather, the viruses carry genes that can cause cells to proliferate. Again, look at HPV, the high risk viruses (HPV type 16, 18, 31, 33, etc) have genes (we call them oncogene) E6 and E7. These gene encode E6 and E7 proteins that inhibit tumor suppressor proteins p53 and pRb respectively, causing cells to grow.
