Exceptions
There is a catch, however. There are some extremely rare exceptions involving rare heart defects where holes in the walls of the heart allow for blood (and blood clots arising in the veins) flowing from the right side of the heart to bypass the lungs and enter the left side of the heart directly. In such cases, part of a blood clot arising in the venous system can travel to the brain to cause a stroke. This condition is called 'paradoxical embolism'.
