2014年3月28日，《柳叶刀杂志》(The Lancet)在线发表了一篇系统和整体分析，对北美和欧洲11项研究的分析表明，施行禁烟法规一年后，早产和因为哮喘住院减少10%，其节省的医疗成本远超烟草税的损失。
