Whatever you do, don’t pursue it for the free tuition
It’s not worth the time and commitment on that basis alone.
Successful MSTP students genuinely love research. They find it intellectually challenging and deeply fulfilling, even though it is often less financially rewarding than purely clinical work.
If your son truly loves research, then an MD/PhD could be a great fit.
Otherwise, he should think it through very carefully.
