No way to accelerate background check. Call visa appointment phone and tell the operator your situiation, she might give you an email address that you can reach somebody who can process your passport return.

Please note that you need to describe your situation and your request (return your passport) and the reason you have to get your passport so that you can use it along with your AP.

One word, tell them the truth. You'll be OK.
