After using your AP, you will be AOS; however, if you work for the same employer when you come back, you can still work under your previous H-1 and not required to a new H-1. You can reinstall your H-1 status if you file a new H-1 petition, or transfer your H-1, or get an H-1 visa outside of USA. Bottom line, if you work for the same employer, you do not have to worry your H-1 status.
