h1b visa

due to reasons, there is a gap of 15 days between my h1b visas(transfering from Univ A to B). i was told that i have to return to china and apply h1b there. it is 2222 bad. i am 07 jul NIWer. 140 approved. 485 pending. i am the applicant. my family are h4. they have EAd and AP(they never use them). i dont have. i want to know:
1. my family also have to return to china? if they wont, will they change to AOS?
2. what happen to my niw case? stopped? i want to keep it even though it is a chicken wing.
