Technically, USCIS should receive your application before your H1 status expires. But practically, I think you will be fine because I think USCIS will approve your petition with starting date on the date your H1 expired due to your status gap is very very short (1-3 days). Thus, your status will have no gap after your petition is approved and you should not worry about that and just continue your work.
