Help! --- H1-B transfer question

I have been on H1-B and also submitted my I-485 last July. My I-140 was approved last November.

I was laid off recently, my former employer told me they won't report my leave from the company until end of August. The lawyer told me I can transfer my H1-B before before that and start work unpon receiving the receipt. Although I expect to receive one or two offers very soon, I am not sure if I can submit H1-B transfer by the end of the month.

I'd like to know how long do I have to do H1-B transfer. Is there any extention beyond my termination or the lawyer was right.
