h1b extension pending and ap

My h1b six year extension application(submitted on 5/20/2008) is pending and my current h1b will expire in September 2008. I expect to use AP in October to visit my parent in China. If my h1b extension is not approved in October, can I still come back to US by AP? I don't have a EAD.
