help, h1b transfer pending, do I need to file h1b extension

Ld got a university(b) offer which begin in 07/08, and b has filed the h1b transfer which is pending now . his current h1b visa will expire in 08/08, the HR just ask LD to provide information to file the h1b extension. How should we do now? he didn't want to the current employer know that he will change the job because he is afraid to be lay off immedieatally, but the new job will begin two month later. can we take this risk?
