When is the last day of filing my H1B extension?

My H1B will expire in 4 months (May 31, 2008).

When is the reasonable last day of filing H1B extension?
Should I get receipt before May 31st, so that I can keep working without any gap?
Currently, how long does it take to get the receipt?
