HR doesn't necessarily know if you're still on H-1 visa. I think PJ is right because H-1 allows dual intentions-while working temporarily you may apply (intent) to stay permanently. (F-1 visa holders do not enjoy this privilege). Your I-485 and AP as part of I-485 program doesn't jeopardy your intentions, it's perfectly okay that you come back to u.s. with AP documents and remain on H-1 visa.
