1) Check your I-797 approval notice of H-1 or expiration;
2) If it is past above expiration, you can not work unless you hold a valid EAD;
3) If H-1 is still valid and you use AP to come back US, you may extend your H-1 when it is necessary which brings you back to H-1 on condition of not having used EAD
