I had same experience three years ago. I asked company to use my serverence as regular pay for a few months( changed to checks with stabs). When I found new job, the stabs as certification in payroll to transfer to new H1-B. You can start work as soon as you the new H1-B. Ask your company don't send the delist note to Dept of Labor.
