Change from H1b to F-2

I was just laid off and would like to maintain my status by switching from H-1b to F2 (my wife is F-1 holder). Can I do it by myself? What kind of documents I should prepare and submit? Is there any expected difficulty in doing this? I would greatly appreciate any comments from friends with experience. thanks a million.
