H1B planning to go to china

I knew that H1 holers can apply for AP after they file form 485. I just got my H1 and have not filed form 485 yet. I am wondering if I can apply for AP before I leave US for china to ensure I will be able to come back even if I got rejected H1 visa in Beijing. Thank you for your help.
