H1B and I485 pending

After filing I485 pending(Neither EAD nor AP were applied), can H1B holder apply for H1B extension??
I called INS toll free phone number, the officer said H1B holder automatically lose H1B status after filing I485. I doubt about it. Is the officer correct?
