Actually you have to use the AP to reentry US if you are in the status of I-485 pending. My lawyer told me that INS will believe you give up your I-485 application if you did not show your AP on the port of entry.

I am not sure if it is true. When I was in SFO, I presented both my H1B and AP to the visa officer. When he saw my AP, he did not look at my H1B at all.

The H1B visa will be still valid as long as you do not use the EAD.
