About going home with H1B

I haven't been back home for more than 6 years! I am thinking about going home pretty soon. I just want to know the risk of going back to China? I am currently under H1B and in the process of applying for green card! I heard about the security background check, does it apply for everybody, or just people with high tech background? Some people say it could take 3-4 months, but I am only a programmer for an accounting firm! I don't think I can hold the job for 3-4 months without coming back! Please advise! Thanks a ton!
