H1B expires May 2007, can I renew it now?

The company may experience some changes in the near future, so I want to get it done soon.

Also, I have my approved I-140, waiting for PD to be current. Can I get a 3 year extension instead of 1? Sometimes I heard 1, sometimes 3, so I'm confused.
