You can continue to work on pending status until 60 dyas after your H-1B expired. After 60 days expiration of your H-1B, you cannot work but can stay in the U.S. waiting for approve (I dont' want to assume the case if it is reject).

usually company supports all cost of H-1B renew, they just don't want to spend more if you are not emergency.
