You can work for any employer. But you need to file a new H1 application once you come back to US to work.

If you stay outside US for more than 365 days, your new H1 is 6-yr max, which is subject to the H1 quote.

If you stay outside US for less than 365 days, your new H1 remains only 1.25 yr, which is not subject to quote.
