HELP: H1B Tax

Dear everyone! I am in great need of your advice. I am now working for a research institute by holding a H1B visa. One of my friends would like me temporarily to help on his project which is not related to my current work. He is gonna pay me by check. I am wondering whether and how this sort of income should be taxable. By the way, I am still under the tax treaty exemption period.
