AP is much more easier and safer than any visa. Plus, it won't affect your H-1B if you come back to the same employer. It's for entering US, not for leaving. Basically you only need to take AP itself to do foreign travel and the US custom won't ask you tough questions. To be more secure, you may take 485 receipt notice and the current H-1B status notice.
