My own case:

Called 06/01/2010 for service request, and got a USCIS　formal response via regular mail (received around 06/08/2010) saying my case had not been reviewed yet.One Senator's office sent USCIS a request on 06/09/2010. Just received a copy from the Senator's Office of the USCIS response dated 06/10/2010 saying my case was already with an officer. On 06/11/2010, received welcome notice.

I don't know whether it is pure coincidence, but would like to think that contacting the Senator helped.
